Traditional British cattle breeds can stand up to the elements even when out wintered, and they graze sites of nature conservation value. Most of our cows calve in spring outside on land above 1,100 ft. Cows are put on fells to encourage re-generation by eating the moor grass.
They are born and bred on the farm and they stay there through to slaughter at around 30 months of age , when they are taken to a local abattoir to reduce stress.
The native cows we run are Blue Greys, Galloway, Cross Highland and pure Highland. They are smaller and lighter in weight causing less damage to areas of rough grazing. They excel as a good hill suckler cow as they are hardy, easy to maintain, fertile and prolific and have excellent mothering abilities. The Pigs are Saddlebacks which is a traditional breed. They are fed on vegetable waste and a small amount of cereals. The pigs enjoy a contented and stress free life growing slowly and naturally.

The Dalesbred Sheep is a very localised breed to the area they live in.The ewes are hefted to Black and Blanch fell where they graze right up to Ward Stone which is the highest point in Lancashire at 1950 ft.
The Dalesbreds spend most of their life on the fell just coming down to the farm stead for lambing and routine jobs. The Dalesbreds are well suited to endure the hardships of exposed and high lying situations. The Swaledale Sheep live on separate fells to the Dalesbreds Winder, Moorcock and Deep Clough, where they spend most of their lives grazing on heather and moorland. The Swaledale is the most popular hill breed of sheep for hardiness and excellent mothering ability and can survive on the highest fell farm.
